About the Global Leadership Institute

The Global Leadership Institute was created to provide a forum for students to learn how to participate and lead in our global society in a small, fun, learning environment.

The United States is not only becoming more interconnected with the global world, it is also growing in its internal diversity. Additionally, employers increasingly list multicultural awareness among the top critical employability skills they are seeking in job candidates. This experience prepared participants for such opportunities and equipped them to make positive contributions to our University and beyond.

In the Context of Leadership, Participants Explored
Topics ranging from globalization, gender, class, religion, race and ethnicity.

Whether an aspiring, new, or experienced student leader, this unique opportunity provided a chance for participants to reflect upon their own leadership, develop insights and broaden their repertoire of useful approaches to leadership in multicultural contexts.

    Outcomes
  • Participants demonstrated their ability to listen actively, lead more effectively, and work with others whose worldview, communication styles, beliefs and values were different from their own.
  • Participants demonstrated an understanding of their cultural identities.
  • Participants demonstrated their ability to build meaningful interpersonal relationships with people from a broad variety of cultural backgrounds.

Program Format
The high-impact sessions were filled with presentations and activities provided by some of the nation’s most prominent and inspiring scholars. Institute faculty used various teaching techniques: videos, discussion, case studies, presentations, and role plays. Most sessions began with a large-group presentation and were followed by deeper dialogue in smaller groups.

    Upon successful completion of the Institute, participants received:
  • A formal Certificate of Leadership;
  • A Resource Packet with information to help them stay connected;
  • A commemorative Global Leader lapel pin that symbolizes a personal commitment to inclusive leadership;
  • Valuable skills that will carry them wherever their future leads;
  • A letter of recommendation for use in future aspirations.
