Texas A&M Hosts 'Young Leaders Conference'
About 150 high school students from across Texas are at Texas A&M University this week to learn and practice the skills for success in college and beyond. The four-day "Young Leaders Conference - Great Debate" is co-sponsored by Texas A&M and the National Hispanic Institute (NHI), a San Antonio-based organization that prepares Hispanic high school students nationwide for leadership. The conference at Texas A&M continues through Sunday. Participating students from Austin, Baytown, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley and Seguin are entering their sophomore year in high school later this summer.

Partnership Agreement Signed Today With Hispanic Institute
Saying that Texas A&M's efforts to boost minority enrollment is expected to result in a significant increase in Hispanics for the Class of 2009, Texas A&M University President Robert Gates today signed a partnership agreement with a national Hispanic organization dedicated to helping with that effort. The National Hispanic Institute (NHI) is a leadership program for young Latinos. In partnership with higher education institutions such as Texas A&M, NHI programs offer cultural identity for young Latinos, heighten intellectual capabilities for college and beyond and provide a framework for students to evaluate self- potential and leadership opportunities in Latino community life.

Coleman to Speak on Early Texas A&M Race Relations on Thursday
Drawing on materials from his forthcoming book, Assistant Professor of English Finnie Coleman will present his views Thursday (March 3) on the early history of race relations Texas A&M as gleaned from yearbooks, newspapers, legislative reports and other historically relevant documents. The presentation dealing with "early efforts at negotiating race and racism" at Texas A&M will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Evans Library 106. Coleman's soon-to-be-published book is titled "Strategies of a Black Intellectual; White Supremacy and Sutton E. Griggs's Science of Collective Efficiency." His presentation is the sixth in the "Diversity, Globalization and Higher Education Seminar Series" sponsored by Texas A&M's Race and Ethnic Studies Institute (RESI). Texas A&M To Open Seventh Prospective Student Center
Continuing its efforts to ease the process for prospective students and their parents to obtain admissions and financial-aid information, Texas A&M University will formally open Wednesday (March 2) its seventh prospective student recruitment center in key areas of the state - this one in The Power Center in Houston, making Harris County the only area to have two such facilities. The other prospective student centers are in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Bryan-College Station and the Rio Grande Valley. University President Robert M. Gates and other Texas A&M officials will be at The Power Center - at 12401 S. Post Oak Road - to commemorate the occasion, beginning at 2 p.m. They will be joined by the Rev. Kirbyjon H. Caldwell, senior pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church and founder of the Pyramid Community Development Corp., which owns and operates The Power Center. Colonias Summer Service Learning Program
The Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, The Academy of Future International Leaders, the Department of Race and Ethnic Studies, the Office for Vice President of Diversity, the Glasscock Center, and the Department of Multicultural Services are pleased to announce the Colonias Summer Service Learning Program, a unique five-week summer border learning experience in Laredo from July 6, 2005 to August 8, 2005.

Keeping the Dream Alive Diversity Awards
Since 1991, the Keeping the Dream Alive Diversity Awards have been held to acknowledge and honor the efforts of members of the campus community who strive during the year to promote understanding and appreciation of diversity at Texas A&M. This year, The Keeping the Dream Alive Diversity Awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in MSC 201. This annual event is co-sponsored by the Department of Multicultural Services, the Office of the Dean of Faculties and Associate Provost, Services for Students with Disabilities, and the Student Government Association.
Nomination forms are available at 137 MSC or online at http://aggieculture.tamu.edu. Forms are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2005 to Martha Salsgiver (137 MSC).

New Prospective Student Centers
Texas A&M University has spent two million dollars to staff each of its new prospective student centers. These prospective student centers are located in Corpus Christi, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and the Brazos and Rio Grande Valleys. Financial aid officers are available to visit with prospective students and their families as well as school officials. For more information visit the Prospective students' website.

Participation in the Faculty Reinvestment Plan
The Office of Institutional Assessment and Diversity has taken part in several of the Faculty Re-investment plan meetings and has guided the development of effective hiring criteria supporting diversity across the campus. The Office has also participated in several faculty searches and appointments and has assisted in the ongoing training of many colleges regarding diversity in the hiring process.

VIP Program Recruits Minority Students
Texas A&M's new minority recruitment effort brings students from high schools to visit the Texas A&M University campus. Once on-campus the students are welcomed by university and student leaders, guided through the financial aid and application process, and receive advising from their potential academic department.
