Fighting Xenophobia and Anti-Asian Racism

The pandemic and COVID-19 have brought a great deal of uncertainty to our lives, along with potential for misinformation that can be harmful or destructive to our campus and communities. This resource provides proactive strategies that reinforce “Hate is not an Aggie value.” We hope you will work to intervene when you encounter discriminatory behaviors, hateful comments, and acts on social media. 

Pushing Back Against Racism and Xenophobia on Campuses -- From Inside Higher Ed  (05/14/20), MarYam Hamedani, Hazel Rose Markus and Paula Moya highlight five ways college educators can have more effective conversations about race.

Reducing Stigma -- From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this resource provides facts related to COVID-19, tips for communicating about the health crisis, and ideas for dealing with stress and fear. This resource is available in many languages, including Spanish.

How to Respond to Coronavirus Racism -- From Teaching Tolerance, this resource provides strategies for intervening on racist or xenophobic comments about coronavirus or any other discrminatory or racist behaviors.

Self-Care Tips For Asian Americans Dealing With Racism Amid Coronavirus -- This resource is a Huffington Post (4/02/20) article by Brittany Wong. Wong  acknowledges the United States' history of xenophobia and anti-Asian sentiment and shares current experiences. Additionally, she provides self-care and community-building advice.

Self-Care for Caregivers --  From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this resource provides tips and practices for protecting one's self and others when caring for someone with COVID-19. This resource is available in many languages, including Spanish.
